Artist’s Statement

In recent centuries Humankind has moved fast – often faster than ancient traditions that culture clings to in search of purpose and inspiration. During cultural celebrations around the world, from the deepest Amazon to the streets of London, time sometimes stands still. Amidst the chaos, colour and ecstasy of vibrant celebrations –a glimpse of something more ancient, human and unifying.

Over the last 10 years, documentary filmmaker & photographer Mat Currington has travelled the world to photograph the power and spirit of local cultural events. During each of these often chaotic events, the photographer disregarded the usual use of camera shutter speed to capture unfolding events as they happened using extremely slow shutter speed, usually around ¼ second or longer. This ‘slow motion’ style mimics the motion of the participants and connects viewers to connect to their primal experience of the participant. The series of work invites us to take a closer look at the history, vibrancy and connective tissue of humanity present during the most exhilarating moments of these cultural celebrations
